Barry Letts
Barry Leopold Letts (26 March 1925 – 9 October 2009) was a distinguished English actor, director, writer, and producer, celebrated primarily for his role as producer of the iconic television series Doctor Who from 1969 to 1974.
Hailing from Leicester, Letts initially began his career as an actor, performing across theatre, film, and television. However, he transitioned from acting in his early forties to focus on directing. His tenure as producer for Doctor Who was particularly significant, during which he played a crucial role in shaping the series. He oversaw nearly the entire run of Jon Pertwee's portrayal of the Third Doctor and was instrumental in casting Tom Baker, who became the Fourth Doctor, a role that would cement the show’s legacy.
In addition to his work on Doctor Who, Letts produced or directed numerous BBC Sunday Classic drama serials from 1976 through 1986, contributing to the network's rich storytelling heritage. His expertise led him back to Doctor Who in 1980, where he served as executive producer for the show’s eighteenth season. Letts' contributions to British television have left an indelible mark, showcasing his talent and passion for the medium throughout his prolific career.
