2 titles Directing Jan 10, 1931 Died: Jan 03, 1987 Brookline, Massachusetts, USA

David Maysles, born on January 10, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, was part of a renowned documentary filmmaking duo alongside his older brother, Albert Maysles. The Maysles brothers were pioneers of the cinéma vérité style, creating compelling documentaries that captured real life with an unfiltered lens. Their notable works include the influential films "Salesman" (1968), "Gimme Shelter" (1970), and "Grey Gardens" (1976). In 1964, they also produced a significant film featuring The Beatles, which later became an essential component of the DVD "The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit."

Throughout their careers, the Maysles brothers focused on documenting various artistic projects, particularly those of the environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, spanning over three decades from the Academy Award-nominated "Valley Curtain" (1974) to "The Gates," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005.

Tragically, David Maysles passed away from a stroke on January 3, 1987, in New York. Albert Maysles, who graduated from Syracuse University and earned his master's at Boston University, continued their legacy, receiving accolades such as a lifetime achievement award from the AFO film festival in 2005. He also founded the Maysles Institute, a nonprofit aimed at empowering underserved communities through film training and apprenticeships, and has been a supporter of the filmmaker community Shooting People.
