Al Lewis was an iconic American character actor, celebrated primarily for his portrayal of "Grandpa" on the CBS sitcom The Munsters, which aired from 1964 to 1966. Lewis gained initial recognition on television through shows like The Phil Silvers Show and as Officer Leo Schnauser in the sitcom Car 54, Where Are You? (1961-1963), which he reprised in the 1994 film adaptation.
In addition to his acting work, Lewis was a restaurant owner, political candidate, and radio host, even making headlines during a live broadcast on The Howard Stern Show in 1987 for his outspoken remarks against the FCC. He embraced his typecast role as "Grandpa," stating, "It pays the bills." Later in his career, he reprised his famous character in various projects, including the 1991 series Hi Honey, I'm Home! and the film Grampire. Lewis remained a beloved figure in entertainment until his passing in 2006, leaving a lasting legacy as a unique talent.
