Kwame Ture

Kwame Ture, originally born in Trinidad, emerged as a key figure in the American civil rights movement and the international Pan-African movement. Relocating to the United States at the age of 11, he was deeply influenced by his experiences and began his journey as an activist during his time at the Bronx High School of Science.

Ture, previously known as Stokely Carmichael, is perhaps best recognized for coining the term "Black Power," a rallying cry that galvanized a generation of activists seeking racial justice and equality. His leadership role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) helped amplify efforts in voter registration in the South, particularly in Mississippi, where he played a pivotal part in the Freedom Summer of 1964.

In 1966, Ture became the chairman of SNCC, where he further championed the cause of Black empowerment. Later in his life, he shifted his focus to Pan-Africanism, advocating for the unity and self-determination of African peoples worldwide. His work included significant contributions to the All-African People's Revolutionary Party.

Ture's legacy is marked by his passionate commitment to social justice and empowerment, underscored by his influential writings and speeches. He remained a steadfast advocate for civil rights until his passing in 1998, leaving behind a powerful legacy that continues to inspire activists around the globe.
