Plot

Miriam Makeba, a pioneering African artist, rose to global fame while remaining deeply connected to her South African heritage. Exiled in 1959, her powerful voice resonated with political activism, advocating for justice and fighting against apartheid. Throughout her life, she collaborated with icons like John F. Kennedy, Harry Belafonte, and Nina Simone, and had notable marriages to Hugh Masekela and Stokely Carmichael. Mika Kaurismäki's documentary delves into Makeba's extraordinary five-decade career, featuring rare archival performances and interviews with peers, painting a vivid portrait of her impactful legacy. Makeba passed away in November 2008, after a concert in Italy.
