Octavia Lenora Spencer, born on May 25, 1970, is a celebrated American actress known for her outstanding contributions to film and television. Her impressive accolades include an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Spencer's cinematic journey began with her role in the 1996 drama A Time to Kill. After spending a decade in various minor roles across film and television, she gained significant recognition in 2011 for her performance as a maid in the 1960s-set drama The Help, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Following this success, she received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal in Ryan Coogler’s biopic Fruitvale Station (2013). She also had a notable recurring role in the CBS sitcom Mom (2013–2015) and starred in the Fox drama series Red Band Society (2014–2015).

Her performances as significant black women during the 1960s in Hidden Figures (2016) and as a cleaning woman in The Shape of Water (2017) led to two consecutive Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first black actress to accomplish this. Spencer has continued to work in projects such as The Divergent Series (2015–16), The Shack (2017), and the Apple TV+ drama series Truth Be Told (2019–2023).
