Rubén Blades
Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna, born on July 16, 1948, is a multifaceted figure from Panama, renowned as a salsa singer, songwriter, lawyer, actor, Latin jazz musician, and politician. His musical style predominantly features Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz influences, and he is celebrated for infusing his songs with the lyrical depth of Central America's nueva canción and Cuba's nueva trova, alongside innovative rhythms and politically charged themes characteristic of Nuyorican salsa. Blades has penned numerous iconic tracks, including "Pedro Navaja," which tells the gripping tale of a street thug and is inspired by "Mack the Knife." His composition "Patria" (Fatherland) is regarded by many Panamanians as their second national anthem.
A beloved figure in Panama, Blades is also admired across Latin America. In 1994, he made a notable bid for the Panamanian presidency, garnering 18% of the vote despite not winning. His political involvement continued when he was appointed as Minister of Tourism by President Martín Torrijos in September 2004, serving a five-year term. Blades is academically accomplished, holding a law degree from the University of Panama and a master's in international law from Harvard University. He shares his life with singer Luba Mason, and together they reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Latin music and politics.
