Leona Roberts, born Leona Celinda Doty on July 26, 1879, in a quaint Illinois village, was a prominent American actress known for her extensive work on stage and in film. Roberts made her Broadway debut in 1926, captivating audiences in approximately 40 productions until 1945, primarily in supporting roles that showcased her impressive range.

Her cinematic journey began the same year with the film Poor Mrs. Jones, produced by the United States Department of Agriculture, where she took on a leading role. In 1937, she transitioned to Hollywood, where she became a familiar face in over 40 films, often portraying nurturing maternal characters. Among her most memorable performances was that of the gossipy Mrs. Meade in the iconic classic Gone with the Wind (1939), where she starred alongside Harry Davenport.

Roberts displayed her comedic talents with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in the screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby (1938) and shared the screen with James Stewart in Of Human Hearts (1938) and Shirley Temple in The Blue Bird (1940).

In 1941, she returned to her theatrical roots on Broadway, where she continued to perform until the mid-1940s. Later, she returned to Hollywood for a few final film roles, including a small appearance in The Loves of Carmen (1948) before retiring in 1949. Leona Roberts passed away on January 29, 1954, leaving behind a rich legacy in American entertainment.
