The son of actress Paula Marr, Collier faced family changes early on, as his mother divorced and later married fellow actor William Collier Sr., who adopted him. This early exposure to the performing arts sparked Collier’s passion for acting, leading him to take the stage at just seven years old. His film debut came at the young age of 14 in the 1916 production, The Bugle Call.

In the 1920s, Collier established himself as a prominent leading man, effortlessly transitioning from silent films to the new era of talkies. Despite his success, he chose to step away from acting in 1935, shifting his focus to film production in England by 1937. After a productive stint abroad, he returned to the United States in the late 1940s, where he transitioned into producing television drama series.
