Plot

The day before his departure to Africa, Captain Ferréol pays a visit to Gilberte Boismartel, his past love, who is now wed to Rochemore, a French magistrate. He brings along her old love letters to return them. As he departs, he unexpectedly witnesses the shocking murder of Rochemore.
