Mary Jackson
Mary Jackson, a beloved character actress, is widely recognized for her memorable role as "Miss Emily" Baldwin, one of the quirky bootlegging sisters on the iconic television series The Waltons, which aired from 1971 to 1981. Born on November 22, 1910, in Milford, Michigan, she graduated with a bachelor's degree from West Michigan University in 1932. Jackson initially worked as a school teacher during the Great Depression before she fully embraced her passion for the performing arts, returning to academia at Michigan State University to study fine arts.
Her career took off on the Chicago stage and in summer stock theater, eventually leading her to the vibrant scenes of New York and Los Angeles. However, it wasn’t until later in life that she began landing significant film and television roles. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she made guest appearances on popular shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, The Twilight Zone, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, often portraying sweet, small-town ladies.
In addition to her television work, Jackson appeared in notable films, including Peter Bogdanovich's Targets (1968), the epic Airport (1970), and the drama Coming Home (1978) alongside Jane Fonda. Following her success on The Waltons, she reprised her role in several reunion specials, the last being A Walton Easter in 1997. Mary Jackson passed away in 2005 at the age of 95 due to complications related to Parkinson's disease, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and charm in her performances.
