Dolores Costello

Dolores Costello (September 17, 1903 – March 1, 1979) was a prominent American actress celebrated for her significant contributions to silent cinema, earning the affectionate title of "The Goddess of the Silent Screen." Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to actors Maurice and Mae Costello, she was of Irish and German heritage and had a younger sister, Helene. Both sisters began their film careers as child actresses with the Vitagraph Film Company between 1909 and 1915, often appearing alongside their father.

Costello's talent led her to Broadway before signing with Warner Brothers, where she gained recognition for her compelling performances. In 1926, she starred alongside John Barrymore in *The Sea Beast*, a loose interpretation of *Moby-Dick*, igniting a romantic relationship that culminated in their marriage in 1928. The following years saw her rise to fame, notably being named a WAMPAS Baby Star that same year.

She showcased her versatility in films such as *When a Man Loves* (1927) and *Noah's Ark* (1928), but faced challenges transitioning to sound due to her lisp. After giving birth to her first child in 1930, Costello stepped back from acting, eventually returning to the screen in the 1930s with notable performances in *Little Lord Fauntleroy* (1936) and *The Magnificent Ambersons* (1942). She retired from acting after *This is the Army* (1943) and later lived a quieter life managing an avocado farm. Costello passed away from emphysema in Fallbrook, California, in 1979.
