Robert Quarry
Robert Walter Quarry (November 3, 1925 – February 20, 2009) was an American actor celebrated for his influential roles in the horror genre. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to physician Paul Quarry and Mable Quarry, he carved out a niche for himself in the film industry during the 1970s.
Quarry is best remembered for his portrayal of the titular character in *Count Yorga, Vampire* (1970) and its sequel, *The Return of Count Yorga* (1971). He also showcased his talent in *Dr. Phibes Rises Again* (1972), where he played the alchemist Dr. Biederbeck, engaging in a fierce rivalry with Vincent Price's character. Their on-set dynamic was marked by tension, famously highlighted by Price's sardonic remark about Quarry's singing and acting abilities. Despite plans by American International Pictures to position Quarry as Price's successor in horror, the shift in audience tastes and the company's decline halted those aspirations.
Further contributions to the genre include his roles as the hippy vampire Khorda in *The Deathmaster* (1973) and a gangster in the zombie flick *Sugar Hill* (1974). Quarry faced challenges in his career, particularly after a severe car accident caused facial injuries, but he made memorable television appearances in shows like *The Rockford Files* and *Buck Rogers in the 25th Century*. In the 1980s and 1990s, he found a new audience through collaborations with director Fred Olen Ray. Quarry passed away at the age of 83 in Woodland Hills, California, leaving behind a legacy within the horror film landscape.
