Vivean Gray, originally named Jean Vivra Gray, was born on July 20, 1924, and passed away on July 29, 2016. She was a prominent English actress known for her memorable portrayals of chatty characters in Australian television. Gray began her life in England but relocated to Australia in search of better acting prospects.

One of her notable roles was that of Miss McGraw, a mathematics teacher, in Peter Weir's acclaimed film, Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). Gray became a household name through her performances in two popular Australian soap operas: she played Mrs. Ida Jessup throughout the entire run of The Sullivans and later took on the role of Mrs. Nell Mangel in Neighbours, making a lasting impact on the series.

In 1984, Gray made waves in the show Prisoner, portraying the genteel yet sinister Edna Pearson. This role sparked controversy when a viewer claimed the storyline mirrored her own life, which led to legal threats against the show's producers. Consequently, any content related to the woman’s experience was edited from later broadcasts, although the uncut episodes were eventually released on DVD in the UK in 2010.

After facing backlash from fans who struggled to separate her character from reality, Gray left Neighbours, with her character relocating to St Albans, England. She eventually returned to England, where she chose to retire from the public eye, embracing a quieter life away from the spotlight.
