Ray Smith
Ray Smith (May 1, 1936 – December 15, 1991) was a distinguished Welsh actor renowned for his compelling performances on stage and screen. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the tough-talking Detective Superintendent Gordon Spikings in the popular television series *Dempsey and Makepeace*. Smith's versatility as an actor was further showcased when he became the inaugural voice of Brother Cadfael in BBC radio adaptations, bringing depth to the character that captivated listeners.
One of his most memorable roles was as Dai Bando in the BBC's 1975 adaptation of *How Green Was My Valley*. This performance was particularly poignant for Smith, whose own father tragically lost his life in a mining accident when Ray was only three years old. His ability to draw from personal experience enriched his acting and resonated deeply with audiences.
In his later years, Smith took on a role in the television adaptation of Kingsley Amis' novel, *The Old Devils*. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he passed away from a heart attack at the age of 55, just before filming wrapped up. In recognition of his talent and contributions to the arts, he was awarded the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actor posthumously in 1992, solidifying his legacy in Welsh cinema and television.
