William Austin

William Austin (12 June 1884 – 15 June 1975) was a distinguished British character actor whose journey began on a sugar plantation in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana). Following his father's passing, he relocated to England to pursue his education. Austin's career initially led him to a business role in Shanghai, but a subsequent assignment in San Francisco inspired him to embrace his passion for acting, transitioning from stage performances to the silver screen.

Throughout the 1920s to the 1940s, Austin appeared in numerous American films and serials, often in minor or uncredited roles. He is particularly remembered for his performance as Clara Bow's loyal friend in her iconic 1927 film, *It*. Austin was also the sibling of fellow actor Albert Austin.

One of Austin's most notable contributions came in 1943 when he portrayed Alfred, Batman's devoted butler, in the Batman serial. His interpretation of Alfred introduced a leaner character with a mustache, a significant departure from previous portrayals. This depiction resonated so deeply that it influenced the comic book character's design, which adopted this look moving forward. Austin's legacy as Alfred has endured, shaping the character's representation in various adaptations, aside from a few exceptions in live-action formats. Austin passed away in Newport Beach, California, leaving behind a rich legacy in film and television history.
