Tom Pittman
Tom Pittman (March 16, 1932 – October 31, 1958) was a notable American actor celebrated for his work in film and television before his untimely death at just 26. The Los Angeles Times hailed him as "one of Hollywood's most promising young actors," underscoring the potential that was tragically cut short.
Born Jerry Lee Alten in Phoenix, Arizona, he was the son of television and radio actor Frank Alten. Pittman's acting journey commenced in 1956 with a guest appearance on *Science Fiction Theatre*, followed shortly by his film debut in *D-Day the Sixth of June*. He gained recognition for his performances in various Western-themed television series, including *Gunsmoke*, where he portrayed "Jimmy McQueen," a young herder seeking revenge, and "Budge Grilk," a disturbed step-son in the episode "Potato Road." His television credits also included *Cheyenne*, *Have Gun – Will Travel*, *The Restless Gun*, and *Cimarron City*. Notable film projects included the drama *The Young Stranger* and the musical comedy *Bernardine*, both released in 1957.
Pittman's final performances were in the films *Verboten!* and *High School Big Shot*, both released posthumously in 1959. Tragically, on Halloween night in 1958, he lost his life in a car accident while returning from a party. His father reported him missing after he failed to come home, and the young actor's wrecked Porsche was discovered in a ravine in the Hollywood Hills, marking a heartbreaking end to a burgeoning career.
