Hal Smith

Harold John "Hal" Smith (August 24, 1916 – January 28, 1994) was an esteemed American character actor and voice artist whose career spanned several decades, leaving a significant mark in both live-action television and animated productions. He is perhaps most recognized for his memorable portrayal of Otis Campbell, the lovable town drunk on the beloved series The Andy Griffith Show.

In addition to his television work, Smith lent his vocal talents to a myriad of characters in various animated shorts, establishing himself as a versatile voice actor. Notably, he became the iconic voice of John Avery Whittaker in the popular radio drama series Adventures in Odyssey, captivating audiences with his performances.

Throughout his career, Smith was sometimes mistakenly credited for writing the screenplay of the 1955 film It Came from Beneath the Sea, along with ten other films. The actual co-writer of those works was Harold Jacob Smith, who used the pen name "Hal Smith" until 1958, leading to the occasional confusion.
