Franz Walter, an ambitious scientist, eagerly accepts a professorship at a university, committing himself to the GDR's foreign intelligence service until he assumes his new role. Partnering with colleague Dirk, he embarks on covert missions to West Germany, where he resorts to blackmailing innocent individuals for information. As the agency's tactics escalate to targeting GDR refugees and their families with psychological manipulation and invasive surveillance, Franz grapples with his conscience. Feeling increasingly isolated, he plots to steal secret documents for a defection, igniting a tragic chain of events that culminates in his arrest and execution.
