Plot
After World War I, Renier returns to his estate, Horlebecq, grappling with the loss of his wife. His only solace comes from letters exchanged with Rolande, a Parisian woman he met during the war. Despite familial pressure to marry his sister-in-law, Emily, Renier's infatuation with Rolande intensifies. He travels to Paris, where she encourages him to pour money into the "Academie de Beauté." As his financial choices spiral and he distances himself from Emily, tensions at Horlebecq escalate, threatening to unravel both his personal life and family dynamics.
