Plot

Zé, a destitute man, cherishes his donkey above all else. When the animal falls gravely ill, he vows to Saint Bárbara that if it survives, he will carry a cross to her church, mirroring Christ's journey. Miraculously, the donkey recovers, prompting Zé to embark on his pilgrimage. After enduring numerous hardships, he finally reaches the church, only to be met with rejection from the priest, who disapproves of the promise's origins. Zé's unwavering faith is challenged as he grapples with the implications of his devotion and the true meaning of sacrifice.
