Leonardo Villar, originally named Leonardo Motta, was a prominent Brazilian actor born on July 25, 1923, in Piracicaba, São Paulo. He passed away in São Paulo on July 3, 2020. Villar gained international recognition for his unforgettable portrayal of Zé do Burro in Anselmo Duarte's landmark film, O Pagador de Promessas. This film made history as the only Brazilian entry to win the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and it was the first Brazilian and South American feature to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Villar began his artistic journey in theater, making his stage debut in the 1950 production of Os Pássaros. His transition to film came in 1962 with his iconic role in O Pagador de Promessas. In 1965, he expanded his repertoire to television, starring in the telenovela A Cor de Sua Pele, which explored themes of interracial relationships. His career flourished at Rede Globo starting in 1972, where he became well-known for his performances in popular shows like Escalada and Estúpido Cupido.

After a nearly two-decade hiatus from the stage, Villar returned in 2001 with the play A Moratória. In 2008, he made a notable comeback to film in the critically acclaimed Chega de Saudade, reaffirming his status as a cherished figure in Brazilian cinema and theater.
