Shin Dong-Huyk was born into a life of oppression in a North Korean re-education camp on November 19, 1983. Conceived by two prisoners forced into marriage by camp authorities, he endured a harrowing existence marked by relentless labor from age six, alongside severe hunger and brutal treatment. Isolated from the outside world by barbed wire, Shin's fate changed at 23 when he escaped with the aid of an older inmate. His journey through North Korea and China ultimately led him to South Korea, where he faced the daunting challenge of adapting to an unfamiliar society.
