Jean-Jacques Castella, a rough-around-the-edges industrialist, grudgingly attends a performance of Racine's "Berenice" to support his niece, who has a minor role. He finds himself captivated by the lead actress, Clara Devaux, who looks strikingly familiar. As the play progresses, he recalls having previously hired her as an English tutor before unceremoniously letting her go. Determined to reconnect, he enrolls in her language classes. Initially dismissive of him as a grumpy philistine, Clara's resistance fades as Castella wins her over with his unexpected charm.
