In the ancient ruins of Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, archaeologists stumbled upon a fragment of papyrus featuring the earliest known Christian hymn, complete with its lyrics and musical notation. Studied at Oxford University, this find upends conventional perspectives on church history by highlighting the vibrant musical traditions of early Christians. Presented by Australian historian John Dickson, the documentary “The First Hymn” traces the hymn’s path from its origins in the desert to its revival today, as renowned composers Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding adapt the timeless melody into a modern worship song, culminating in a live concert performance.
