My Night at Maud's (1969)

Plot

Catholic intellectual Jean-Louis unexpectedly reconnects with his Marxist friend Vidal during the Christmas season in Clermont-Ferrand. Vidal introduces him to Maud, a charming yet free-spirited divorcee, and the trio engages in deep discussions about religion, love, morality, and the philosophy of Blaise Pascal. As the night unfolds at Maud's apartment, Jean-Louis grapples with his Catholic beliefs surrounding marriage and fidelity. Complicating matters, he has already declared his love for a young woman he has yet to approach, creating a personal conflict between his desires and principles.
