In a 1960s Saskatchewan community, Yvette Wong, a girl of Chinese and Cree descent, grapples with her Indigenous identity amid personal loss. Under the disapproving eye of her mother, Katherine, Yvette secretly explores her Cree roots. She finds a supportive friend in Maggie Wolf, a confident Mi’kmaq girl, who inspires her to embrace her heritage. As Yvette’s classmates discover her ancestry, she confronts the challenges of prejudice but remains steadfast in her ambition to become a doctor. Inspired by real events, Café Daughter is adapted from Kenneth T. Williams’ play, offering a poignant glimpse into identity and resilience.
