Billy Merasty
Billy Merasty is a multi-talented actor, playwright, Cree translator, and dedicated language keeper, born in 1960 in Brochet, Manitoba to Viola and Pierre Merasty. He comes from a lineage of notable figures, including his grandfather Joe Highway, a celebrated caribou hunter and champion dogsled racer. At the age of eighteen, Billy relocated to Toronto seeking his uncle, René Highway, who was involved with the Toronto Dance Theatre.
His acting journey began at twenty-three after he graduated from the Native Theatre School, an institution aimed at nurturing Indigenous talent. Following his graduation, Billy joined the esteemed Indigenous performing arts company, Native Earth Performing Arts, where he honed his craft.
Over the years, Billy has made significant contributions to film, television, and stage acting. One of his standout achievements includes portraying Nathan, the first Indigenous gay character on Canadian television in the CBC series Liberty Street. His work in the arts has earned him recognition as a role model within the Indigenous community. In 2010, he was honored with the Order of Manitoba (Order of the Buffalo Hunt) for his dedication and impact as an Indigenous leader and artist, further solidifying his legacy in the performing arts.
