A young, white educator takes on the challenging role of teaching in the remote fishing community of Yamacraw Island, South Carolina, predominantly inhabited by impoverished black families. Confronted with the stark reality of his students' limited exposure to the outside world and their struggles with literacy, he embarks on a mission to inspire and educate these neglected children. Through his dedication, he aims to broaden their horizons and instill a sense of hope, while also grappling with the cultural and social dynamics that define their lives.
