Plot

Southern Rites explores Montgomery County, Georgia, a year after the integration of its segregated proms, set against the backdrop of a pivotal election that could result in the town's first African-American sheriff. Renowned photographer Gillian Laub, who previously highlighted the area's racial tensions through her work, captures the fallout from the murder of a young black man by a white resident. As the community grapples with the case, deep-seated racial divides resurface, leading to a plea bargain that reveals uncomfortable truths and stirs intense emotions among the townspeople.
