In 1967, filmmaker de Andrade was commissioned by the Italian company Olivetti to create a documentary about Brasília, Brazil's newly established capital. Founded in 1960 as part of a vision to populate the country's interior, the city aimed to showcase a model of democratic urban development, free from entrenched social divides. However, Brasília, Contradições de uma Cidade Nova (1968) exposes the stark reality that the city serves as a utopia primarily for the affluent, mirroring the social issues that plague other major Brazilian cities.
