Plot
In "As Good as It Gets," Melvin Udall, a misanthropic and bigoted writer with obsessive-compulsive tendencies, treats everyone around him with disdain, including his gay neighbor, Simon. When Simon is viciously assaulted and ends up in the hospital, Melvin's routine is disrupted as he finds himself responsible for Simon's dog. Meanwhile, Carol, the sole waitress at the diner who can withstand Melvin's abrasive personality, takes time off to tend to her ailing son, leaving Melvin without his usual breakfast. This series of events forces Melvin to confront his flaws and the relationships he has neglected.
