In the quaint village of Roji, renowned Japanese novelist Kenji Nakagami captures the vibrant absurdity of life and death among its residents. The community is marked by the striking yet troubled men of the Nakamato Clan, who embody a legacy described as “noble yet unholy.” Oryu, a midwife, reflects on her long life spent witnessing the rise and fall of these men. As she grows older, she begins to commune with the spirits of the deceased Nakamato, exploring themes of mortality, memory, and the weight of familial heritage in this poignant narrative.
