King of the Children (1987)

Plot

A young man, shaped by the harsh realities of Mao's Cultural Revolution, finds himself working in the countryside before being tasked with teaching at a local school. As he interacts with his students, who struggle with literacy, he begins to reject the rigid Maoist curriculum. Instead, he inspires the children to express themselves through writing about their personal experiences and emotions, fostering a newfound sense of creativity and self-discovery. His unconventional approach not only transforms the classroom but also empowers the children to find their own voices amidst a repressive regime.
