Plot

Big Steve Halloway, a gambler running New York's Horseshoe Cabaret, faces a financial crisis and schemes to raise funds by convincing fellow bookies, particularly Sorrowful Jones, to bet against his racehorse, Dream Prince. As bets flood in, Sorrowful meets a desperate gambler who, unable to place a $20 wager, offers his daughter, Marthy Jane, as collateral. Dubbed "Marky," the girl unexpectedly becomes the responsibility of Sorrowful and his partner, singer Bangles Carson. Their lives are turned upside down as they navigate the challenges of raising a child amidst the chaos of gambling.
