Plot
Set in eighth-century China, a grieving Emperor mourns his wife’s passing while the influential Yang family schemes to secure power by introducing a new consort. They discover a distant relative, a kitchen worker, and prepare her to captivate the Emperor, who quickly falls for her, elevating her to Princess Yang Kwei-fei. As the Yangs rise to prominence, General An Lushan, denied the court position he desires, stirs discontent among the populace. Ultimately, the ministers' abuse of power ignites a revolt against the Yangs, orchestrated by the resentful An Lushan.
