Plot
Set against the backdrop of 1990 South Africa, Spud Milton embarks on his first year at an elite boys' boarding school after winning a scholarship. Hailing from an ordinary family, Spud faces the challenge of fitting in among uniquely nicknamed classmates like Gecko, Rambo, and Mad Dog. His journey to maturity is complicated by his eccentric parents—his paranoid, anti-communist father and a free-spirited mother, alongside a senile grandmother. As Spud navigates friendships, the chaos of adolescence, and the changing political landscape, he learns that growing up is a tumultuous adventure.
