Plot
Set in Marseilles in 1919, the story follows Georges Sarret, a celebrated lawyer recently recognized for his wartime contributions. He falls for Philomène Schmidt, a young German woman who has lost both her job and home. To keep her in France, Georges arranges a marriage for her, but her new husband dies of natural causes shortly after. Georges repeats this scheme with Philomène's sister, Catherine, marrying her off to an elderly man who also dies unexpectedly, allowing them to cash in on his life insurance. When accomplice Marcel Chambon threatens to expose them, the trio resorts to murder to silence him and his mistress.
