Set in early 1945 Poland, as the country emerges from Nazi occupation, the Communist Security Service brutally targets supposed "national traitors," establishing a labor camp on the grounds of the former Zgoda concentration camp. Franek, determined to rescue his love, Polish inmate Anna, takes a job as a guard. Unbeknownst to him, his German friend Erwin, also in love with Anna, is among the prisoners. Franek's choice to align with the communists stems from a desperate hope to manipulate the oppressive system, leading to a tense exploration of loyalty and betrayal amidst the chaos of a fractured nation.
