Plot
Amidst the chaos of the Guadalcanal invasion during WWII, Private Doll, played by Keir Dullea, faces his fears head-on after stealing a pistol for protection. His cowardice earns him the disdain of Sergeant Welsh, portrayed by Jack Warden, a grizzled veteran with a bitter outlook. When Doll unexpectedly kills a Japanese soldier, guilt consumes him, exacerbating Welsh's contempt. However, as Doll rallies and annihilates an enemy machine gun post, he begins to mirror Welsh's darker instincts. Their survival depends on collaboration while clearing mines, but a sudden Japanese attack tests their fragile alliance.
