Plot

Set in 1930s fascist Italy, young Luca is left to navigate life after the death of his mother. His harsh businessman father delegates his care to Mary Wallace, a British expatriate. Mary, along with her refined circle of friends—artist Arabella, recent widow Elsa, and archaeologist Georgie—embraces the responsibility of looking after the boy. However, their seemingly sophisticated existence is shattered when the Allied forces launch a war against Mussolini, forcing the women to confront the harsh realities of their world.
