Plot

André Demester harbors a deep, unspoken love for his childhood friend Barbe, content with the scraps of affection she offers. He enlists as a soldier, thrust into the chaos of war, where he confronts brutality, builds camaraderie, and faces his fears. Meanwhile, Barbe remains in their hometown, slowly deteriorating as she anxiously awaits the soldiers' return.
