Convicts (1991)

Plot

Set in 1902, young Horace, a 13-year-old boy, labors on a dilapidated Texas plantation, driven by his desire to purchase a tombstone for his deceased father. The plantation's owner, the cantankerous Confederate Soll, grows fond of Horace, yet his advancing age and mental decline cast doubt on the boy ever receiving his hard-earned wages. On Christmas Eve, consumed by thoughts of his mortality, Soll makes a significant promise that challenges Horace to face his own fears of death and the grim realities of a decaying society.
