Plot

Set against the backdrop of wartime Norway, a local doctor, Martin Stensgard, grapples with his family's divided loyalties. His wife, Ruth, clings to an illusion of normalcy, while Martin struggles with his neutral stance. The tension escalates as his brother-in-law, a wealthy cannery owner, collaborates with the Nazis. Their daughter, Karen, becomes embroiled in the resistance, partnering with its charismatic leader, Gunnar Brogge. Meanwhile, their son returns home from university, influenced by his Nazi-sympathizing uncle. Captain Koenig, the German commandant, projects confidence but secretly fears a local rebellion brewing beneath the surface.
