Plot

Amidst World War II, the Germans indiscriminately capture Parisians, threatening to execute one in every ten prisoners as punishment for resistance activities. Lawyer Chavel, selected for execution, bargains for his life by swapping places with another man in exchange for his wealth. After the war, he returns to reclaim his life, attempting to fit into the family of the man he replaced while concealing his identity. Complications arise when an unexpected visitor appears, asserting that he is Chavel, challenging his precarious new existence and forcing him to confront the truth of his choices.
