In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi embarked on the daring Expedition of the Thousand from Quarto, fueled by the excitement of young idealists from across Italy. Among his devoted officers was Colonel Vincenzo Giordano Orsini from Palermo. Among the recruits were two Sicilian men: Domenico Tricò, a farmer who had moved to the North, and Rosario Spitale, an illusionist. Upon their arrival in Sicily at Marsala, they confronted the Bourbon army, whose overwhelming numbers posed a significant challenge. Just when it seemed retreat was inevitable, Garibaldi concocted a clever strategy to turn the tide in their favor.
