Plot

Bertram Cates, a schoolteacher, finds himself in legal trouble for introducing Darwin's theory of evolution to his class. The trial quickly captures the nation's interest, prompting journalist E.K. Hornbeck to invite the famous defense lawyer and atheist Henry Drummond to represent Cates. Opposing him is Matthew Brady, a celebrated evangelist, former presidential hopeful, and long-time rival of Drummond, who is determined to uphold traditional beliefs in the courtroom.
