Widowed Elinor Randall and her young daughter Jerrine venture to a desolate part of Wyoming in 1910 after Elinor secures a position as a housekeeper for rancher Clyde Stewart. The demanding labor and harsh isolation take a toll, especially with winter looming. Contemplating the possibility of homesteading her own land, Elinor faces discouragement from Stewart, who warns her of the brutal conditions ahead for a woman without support. Despite their differences and lack of affection, they decide to marry and merge their land, unaware of the challenges that await them in their new life together.
