Plot

During the Civil War in 1863, Newt Knight, a Mississippi farmer and Confederate medic, grapples with his disdain for slavery while tending to the injured. Following the death of his nephew in battle, he returns to Jones County to protect his family but is labeled a deserter. Escaping into the swamps, he encounters a band of runaway slaves. Together, they unite with other local farmers to mount a rebellion against the Confederacy, igniting a movement that challenges the status quo and leaves a lasting impact on history.
