Plot

As Prohibition draws to a close, bootlegger Bugs Ahearn aims to infiltrate California's elite. He rents a home from the struggling Ruth, employing her as his social secretary. After saving Polly Cass from a dangerous horse incident, he meets her father, who dupes him with counterfeit stock certificates. Upon discovering the scam, Bugs reaches out to mob associates in Chicago for assistance, setting the stage for a clash between aspiration and deception in the high-stakes world of the wealthy.
